Backstory
Captain John de Lancie has all the makings of an ideal Starfleet officer. He is dedicated, clever, inspiring, and meticulous. He is educated on such matters as diplomacy, philosophy, legal matters, and has a keen insight in galactic politics.
There is just one problem: years ago, when he was a young officer, an entity from the Q Continuum chose to make contact with a Starfleet vessel and needed to assume a form that could be understood by its crew. Rather than going through the bother of inventing a whole new individual appearance, the entity decided to copy a random human's appearance - which happened to be John's. Ever since he's haunted by suspicions, allegations, and even outright hostility due to mistaken identity. De Lancie has grown into a captain who is highly capable and determined to prove himself, yet at the same time cautious and slightly timid.

Backstory
Back during the Dominion War, Starfleet was dealing with serious manpower shortages and resorted to allowing non-Starfleet personnel on their ships in supporting roles, especially medical professionals. Doctor "Sunny" (her full real name can't be perceived by the human range of hearing) was one such medic. Officially her position is head nurse, although her expertise makes her overqualified for the job.

She is Dazmodian, a species which evolved from a creature akin to Earth's vampire bats. Dazmodia Prime is a forest world, relatively far from its sun making it cool and dark by human standards. To Dazmodians, most other humanoid homeworlds are overly bright and flooded with radiation. Their ships and stations are no exception. As such, they frequently employ cybernetic enhancements to strengthen their bodies. The Federation finds their approach to self-improvement bordering on the frivolous, a key aspect in preventing their full Federation membership.

As for Sunny, she is a doctor serving on a ship where all of her shipmates are a potential source of food. She can diagnose many conditions by scent alone, sensing that something is off in the patient's blood. The crew respects her skills as a healer but most still instinctively recoil at the thought of being at the mercy of a bloodthirsty vampire-doctor.
